The question of What Happened To Kodi has been in the minds of thousands of people since it was introduced two years ago. Initially it was a very simple Android OS mobile phone with no special abilities. People were amazed by it and the market for it soon became saturated. This was mostly due to the marketing campaign launched by Samsung whereby they would promote their brand name on the device and provide a number of add-ons. These providers soon started to claim that they had the technology to create a superior operating system for mobile phones in the present day.
Soon after this, the legal department of Samsung approached a law firm based in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, which are known as "Coker Law". This company specialises in patent law, contract law, intellectual property law, trade law, franchising law, and other areas of law. A meeting was organised between the marketing manager from Samsung and one of the attorneys involved in the case. This is when the real story about what happened to kodi began.
According to Coker Law, the attorney stated that Samsung contacted them about creating a device known as the "Kodi". The name was taken from the term "Kampoon" which was the keyword used in the mobile's marketing campaign. The company also wanted to trademark and patent the term "Kodi" as well. It was at this point that Coker Law was contacted by a representative of the company known as "Mr. David Coker".
What Happened To Kodi?
Mr. Coker stated that the company wanted to investigate the validity of their trademark application as well as their patenting claim. He went on to state that Samsung was not going to make a profit from selling the product which was not a smartphone. Instead they wanted to launch a mobile website and market the product through that website in conjunction with a series of "branded events". Mr. Coker claimed that Samsung was not developing the product in-house, but rather outsourcing the project to an outside vendor.
The investigation into the product further revealed that Samsung was not using legitimate methods to develop the product. Rather than hiring in-house designers or developers, they hired an outside team that specialise in "brains and vision", something that many patent companies cannot offer. The company's original product creator(s) were not even paid for their work on the project. It was also discovered that Samsung was using the product as a vehicle to sell an already established mobile operating system to the public.
The investigation ultimately turned out to be a loss for Samsung. However, Mr. Coker did go on to state that Samsung will be appealing the US Patent and Trademark Office's decision to allow the patent to be granted. If Samsung appeals it may create more problems for the company. The original product creator for the product will no longer have to pay royalties for a technology that has been stolen. Also if the ruling against Samsung is overturned the company could lose a lot of goodwill with consumers and end up with a huge financial loss.
There are some people that are happy with the verdict however. One of those people is Kim Dong-jun, an entrepreneur who founded the Korea-based Smart Corporation. Mr. Kim stated that the ruling will benefit all manufacturers since all brands are now required to abide by the same rules. He stated that if Samsung loses this patent dispute they may have to deal with a large number of lawsuits as Android users will look to protect their intellectual rights.
The question of what happened to Kodi will be answered soon. Whether or not the ruling will affect the sales of the product creator still remains to be seen. The original product creator is expected to appeal the patent ruling. Also, Samsung will have to reveal the details of how they plan to use the patent to compete with other brands in the market. We'll keep you updated as more details are released.
